This quaint lakeside community takes its name from the erstwhile shipping pier built for the logging and timber industry that put it on the map in the late 1800s. Union Pier became a summer resort around the turn of the century, developing a reputation as the place to find small affordable rental cottages near the lake. Famous denizens have included Jesse Owens and Al Capone. Today, many of the cottages are being renovated or raised to make way for bigger homes. The village is noted for its B&Bs, which include the restored Pine Garth Inn and Scandinavian-inspired The Inn at Union Pier.
